Preventive Medicine Services

Preventive Medicine: The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) defines the discipline as "that specialty of medical practice which focuses on the health of individuals and defined populations in order to protect, promote, and maintain health and well-being and prevent disease, disability, and premature death."

The aim of preventive medicine is the absence of disease, either by preventing the occurrence of a disease or by halting a disease and averting resulting complications after its onset. Clinicians who work in clinical Preventive Medicine see patients on a daily basis and may provide services in screening, health counseling, and immunization. This can include people with diabetes, smokers, cardiac patients, and others who can benefit from prevention and lifestyle modification.

A general health screening may include basic and comprehensive health screening services that help the health practitioner identify potential risks of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and nutritional deficiencies.

A body composition analysis is a crucial aspect of a comprehensive weight assessment and overall health determination. Unhealthy or altered body composition may be associated with certain chronic conditions such as obesity and metabolic syndrome. Body composition also impacts an individual’s metabolism. Thus, it is also important to test an individual’s resting metabolic rate in order to determine calorie needs.

1 in 6 Americans has high cholesterol and does not know it. High cholesterol usually does not have symptoms, and if it goes unchecked, it may increase the risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease and stroke. The lipid panel is typically part of a regular health examination and cholesterol screening. Lipids should be checked at regular intervals in order to monitor changes in this health indicator.

These tests are used to assess and/or monitor blood glucose levels and to aide in treatment decisions. Elevated blood glucose levels and HbA1c are strong predictors of developing pre-diabetes/ type 2 diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. A diagnosis of metabolic syndrome is made if a person has three or more of the following risk factors:

- Elevated fasting blood glucose
- Elevated serum triglycerides
- Abdominal obesity
- High blood pressure
- Low HDL (good cholesterol)

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is an individualized dietary instruction which includes diet counseling therapy for a nutrition related problem. It is a type of treatment for people with certain health conditions such as hyperlipidemia, nutritional deficiency diseases, thyroid disorder, hypertension etc.
Knowing your blood type can be crucial in a medical emergency. Only specific blood types are compatible during a transfusion. Your blood type can also provide insights into your health and motivate you to make healthy lifestyle choices that could reduce your risk for developing certain health conditions.

A thyroid test is performed to evaluate the functions and disorders of the thyroid gland. This test measures the amount of thyroid hormones in the blood. These hormones are responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism.

Lifestyle Medicine Services

Lifestyle Medicine: Defined in the Journal of the American Medical Association as the “evidence-based practice of assisting individuals and their families to adopt and sustain behaviors that can improve health and quality of life." Similar to preventive medicine, lifestyle medicine is recommended as a foundational approach to preventing and treating many chronic diseases.

Nutritional counseling is an intervention performed by a health professional with special training in nutrition. This counseling helps people make healthy food choices and form healthy dietary habits. Nutritional counseling may be offered in either an individual or group setting.

General Health

a. Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): A CMP is used a general screening tool to evaluate organ function and also check for health conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes. A CMP in its entirety also includes a complete blood count (CBC) test and a lipid profile; however, the tests may also be ordered separately.

b. Complete Blood Count (CBC): CBC profile is used to assess general health status. There are health conditions which affect blood cells such as anemia, infection, inflammation and cancer. These conditions can be screened and diagnosed with CBC test.

c. Vitamin D: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with many conditions, including bone loss, kidney disease, lung disorders, diabetes, stomach and intestine problems, and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D test is recommended if a person has symptoms of vitamin D deficiency such as fatigue, bone weakness, and fracture.

d. High Blood Pressure Screening: High blood pressure is defined as a repeatedly elevated blood pressure exceeding 140 over 90 mmHg. Persons with high blood pressure often have no symptoms of the condition. Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and congestive heart failure and a major contributing factor to cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. A body of evidence has shown that screening for and treatment of high blood pressure in adults significantly reduces the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.

Stress management helps patients identify their stress triggers and develop effective coping strategies to manage. Chronic stress is associated with many unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, unhealthy eating, alcoholism, and inadequate sleep. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help manage stress.

Body Composition Analysis and Metabolism

a. Tanita Scale®: This scale provides a reliable estimate of body composition. This is a simple, effective, and noninvasive technology which can be used to measure body fat percentage which is a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases.

b. ReeVue™ Metabolic Testing: This is an indirect calorimeter which is used to estimate the resting metabolic rate (RMR). It measures the oxygen that the body consumes. RMR can be used to calculate the required calorie intake for weight loss and weight maintenance.

It is important to help patients understand that exercise is a vital aspect of achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A physical activity assessment addresses how to make individualized fitness recommendations based on patient’s health and exercise preference. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommendations, adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.

Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR)

PCOR compares the impact of different treatments and interventions on health outcomes to provide evidence on which strategies are most effective in different populations and situations.

Medi-Weightloss® conducts PCOR which focuses on outcomes important to patients’ health and their quality of life, and provides evidence-based treatment options to patients. The company conducts prospective and retrospective studies to evaluate the impact of weight loss interventions on health outcomes.

The adverse health consequences of obesity are well known and include increasing one’s risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. It has been shown that weight loss can improve these conditions, and perhaps more importantly, help to prevent the development of these diseases. Typically, these conditions develop slowly over time, with little to no signs or symptoms early in the process. Therefore early diagnosis and effective interventions can result in tremendous long-term benefits.

WHAT IS PREDIABETES?

Prediabetes is a term used to describe individuals who have blood glucose levels that are just under the range of a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. These individuals are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and are susceptible to diabetes-related health complications, including stroke and cardiovascular disease.

Most people with prediabetes do not have symptoms. In fact, millions of people have it and don’t know it. Symptoms of diabetes include:

Unusual thirst
Frequent urination
Blurred vision
Extreme fatigue
Frequent infections
Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections

If you are overweight or suffer from any of the mentioned symptoms, a simple test that measures your hemoglobin A1C level can determine whether you have prediabetes. This convenient test does not require fasting and can be done at any participating Medi-Weightloss® location.
